week six - Final Done !!!

Week Six
Home stretch

This week was all about finalizing my poster and making sure it was still saying what I had set out to in the beginning. In order to do this I had to take all the elements that were working from my developments and get rid of everything else. This synthesis of ideas was probably my favorite part of developing the poster as it was the moment where I felt like it was all coming together and my poster finally was something I was visually happy with. One struggle I had was trying to keep the poster dynamic when adding type. I also had a lot of trouble with how I wanted to word the quote, however I am happy with how it turned out. Juxtaposing the angular type with a conventional grid underneath with something I found a struggle but in the end I think the type looks like it belongs where it is set. Overall it was a very successful assignment in my opinion and taught me a lot about the language of visual rhetoric and persuasion.

week 5 - Developing visual style

Week  5
Style Experiments

Following the finalization of which idea I am going to head towards I began looking into some different styles it could take on. I started by sketching it up in a few different ways and scanning them in. I also mocked up some illustrated style brains using found images giving a miss-match aesthetic and also worked with photo montage type brains. I experimented with a few different colour ideas none of which are working overly well just yet.

After not findng myself overly happy with the over all style of what I had created I did some more visual research with the hope of finding something to inspire my work. Following this I started to create some works I was more happy with. The works vary slightly in style and content so this is something I need to narrow down before developing my final work.

week four - Critque

Week 4
Drafting for Crit

This week I drafted up four of my poster ideas that I felt have the most room for development and can communicate my idea without being too literal. After  some really good feedback from my peers we decided that the best idea to develop was my flying brain and anvil idea. Everyone really liked the idea, but we decided there was a lot of room for improvement around my chosen tagline. The tag line was too literal and was to direct in terms of referencing the image. I also need to work out some of the nuances around how I will represent Facebook/social media on the anvil. Moving forward I need to do some research into styles I could use to develop my poster and begin testing them.

Week 3 - Develop mock ups

week 3
Development of thumbnails to posters

This week we began turning our thumbnails into sketches that will better represent our poster. I also began to do some digital experiments as I found it quicker and more clear than poor drawing. I developed some of my earlier thumbnails into digital mock ups while also developing some new idea. I am feeling good about where my project is headed but still unsure on what visual style I will take on.

Week Two - Visual synthesis

Week two
image testing

This week we began turning our trigger words into thumbnails/ imagery.
I investigated a number of words which helped to trigger my thumbnails. The words or phrases were investigating a number of different ideas and symbols around the negatives of social media.

Things like:

  • deception, brainwash, blinding from real life
  • distraction
  • social image, self esteem, social self worth
  • social media lens, living through social media
  • take over, mind pollution, control power, addiction

These led to a number of thumbnails and mock up sketches of ways to represent these idea visually.

Week one - Research

Week One
Research

This week I chose the topic I will be doing my assignment on, I chose to look into the negative sides of social media.
I have started looking at existing examples in my workbook while also developing a list of trigger words along with a number of visual symbols and cues to go along with them. I have also looked at some articles around the negative effects of social media. Using these I have highlighted phrases and works which inform my idea. Next step is to start thumb nailing some of these works into images.
